Bio: I was known as ‘China’ when I worked in Fleet Street 25 years ago. In
part this was Cockney rhyming slang – china plate, mate. But it was
also because of my preoccupation with that ancient, mysterious and
remote land which I had first visited in 1979, and later lived in for
a year when I was awarded a scholarship to the Central Academy of
Fine Art in Beijing.
So, back in London, it was no surprise when I announced in 1985, aged
41, that I was quitting and going to work in Hong Kong as a photo-
journalist. I came back to England to live in 2006.
Photography has been part of my life since I was 14 years old, but
after studying politics at the London School of Economics,
the need to earn a living pushed me to the wordy side of journalism.
It took me 20 years and a work environment free from the
restrictions of trade unions, to do what I wanted – travel
around with a camera and be paid for it.
